THE STORY
Tal spent six years building the comeback Cool Runnings never filmed.
In 1988, Tal Stokes did not go to the Olympics in spite of the odds. He went because of what you do when the odds are what they are — you make a plan and you keep going. Cool Runnings is not a movie about a bobsled team that got lucky. It's about four men who did the work.
By 1994, six years after Calgary, the team ranked 10th in the world. That climb has gone largely untold outside Jamaica.
Tal competed at two more Olympic Games after Calgary, qualifying for Nagano in 1998 through the World Cup circuit, bobsleigh's top tier. Four Games in total, each one built on the discipline that first six-year climb demanded.

"Everything I've done in my life has been driven by a need to be the best that I could be at whatever it was that I was doing."

"I didn't know what was impossible. That was the advantage. Without a playbook, I had to figure out what mattered and act on it."

Flying as a JDF helicopter pilot taught Tal to lead under pressure, accept uncertainty, and make decisions fast when there's no time to second guess them.

Game
Tal puts personal sacrifice first, then discipline and training, then strategy, then team chemistry. Skip a step and the rest falls apart.

THE FRAMEWORK
The Filter
Si lo Es
Tal developed SILOES as a filter. Before committing to any solution, tool, or strategy,
he runs it through four checks.
The middle "lo" is a Spanish grammatical connector, not a criterion.
If something fails a check, he does not use it.
Simple
Understandable, even if it is not easy. If you cannot explain the solution clearly, you do not own it yet.
Inexpensive
The returns have to justify the cost. Affordable, not cheap — there is a difference worth knowing.
Effective
The solution solves the problem in full. Partial fixes are not solutions — they are delays.
Sustainable
It holds for as long as the problem requires. A solution that breaks under sustained use was never a solution.

CORPORATE & EVENT SPEAKING
Everything four decades of pressure taught him, in one session.
CORPORATE & EVENT SPEAKING
Your Title Goes Here
Tal speaks to boardrooms, stadiums, and university halls, and the message doesn't change with the room: a practical philosophy for performing under pressure, tested on himself first, over four decades.
He works with corporate audiences, universities, schools, sports organisations, and government bodies, on resilience, leadership, entrepreneurship, Olympic achievement, health and wellness, national pride, and youth motivation. Every engagement is built around your audience, your brief, and what you need people to do differently after they leave the room.
He's available for keynotes, workshops, panel appearances, and masterclasses. A keynote compresses four decades of experience into a single focused session. A workshop puts your team through the SILOES framework in real time. Use the booking form below to describe what you're working with.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY
The impact, in their own words.
"Be the strength of your pack"
Tal Stokes brought something rare to our leadership retreat, a story that was equal parts inspiring and practical. He challenged us to think about curiosity, marginal gains, and what it really means to lead. The wolf pack analogy hit hard: the leader walks at the back, making sure everyone else is on the right path. And his phrase "there is a hero in the mirror" stayed with every one of us long after we left the room.

"Put down your ambition, pick up your purpose."
Tal delivered these words as keynote speaker for Mental Health Awareness Week at Brown Brothers Harriman — a powerful reminder that performance and wellbeing aren't opposites.

THE UNTOLD STORY
The Jamaican
Bobsled Captain
by Ben Stubenberg
In 1988, Tal crashed the four man bobsled at speed in front of a global audience and spent twenty one seconds sliding upside down before it came to a stop. He did not walk away and call it enough. He went back, rebuilt his technique, and qualified for the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer with the same team that later inspired Cool Runnings.
Written by journalist Ben Stubenberg, this is the real story behind the movie: the training, the setbacks, and the discipline it took to turn a crash into a career. It won First Prize for Creative Nonfiction and Memoir at the North Street Book Prize.
